Collagen injections for the treatment of wrinkles have been around since 1976, and that is a long time in the relatively young field of medical cosmetic treatments. First of all we need to understand exactly what collagen injections do, and where the collagen comes from.

Collagen injections are mainly used for smoothing wrinkles and for lip augmentation. The main source of collagen in the cosmetic industry is bovine collagen. Bovine collagen a naturally occurring substance found in the skin, muscle, bones and tendons of cows. This bovine collagen goes through a lengthy purification process to prepare it for cosmetic use.

About three people out of every 100 have an allergic reaction to bovine collagen. To identify these people at risk of an allergic reaction, the cosmetic doctor will normally perform a skin rash test prior to the application. The allergic reaction usually appears in the form of peeling or reddening of the skin, often accompanied by pain, swelling and itching at the site of application. The pain and swelling should subside after a few hours; any lingering symptoms usually disappear by themselves after a few weeks. Very occasionally permanent scarring can be a side-effect of cosmetic collagen injections.
